Turkey ranks among the world’s top 4 tourism destinations

In 2025, Turkey solidified its position on the global tourism map by becoming the 4th most visited country in the world.

According to the May 2025 World Tourism Barometer released by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), Turkey welcomed 56.7 million international visitors in 2024, moving up one place from 5th to 4th. The country’s total visitor count reached 62.3 million, marking one of the most remarkable performances in global tourism.

This achievement reflects the success of Turkey’s long-term efforts in destination diversification, digital promotion, and infrastructure development.

The milestone was celebrated by Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy in a tweet shared on X platform June 23, 2025:

Steady growth in tourism revenues

Data from TurkStat shows that Turkey’s tourism income rose 3.9% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2025, reaching $24.26 billion. The country hosted approximately 34 million foreign tourists in the first eight months of the year—demonstrating both sustained growth and resilience amid global economic shifts.

Global position and competitiveness

Tourism-related activities account for around 4.33% of Turkey’s GDP, reflecting the sector’s central role in the economy.

Turkey now ranks 4th globally, behind Spain, France, and the United States. Experts note that Turkey’s ongoing international marketing campaigns, strong private-sector investment, and expanding flight network have all contributed to this steady climb.

Economic impact and regional benefits

The rise in tourism not only boosted foreign currency inflows but also revitalized regional economies. Destinations such as Antalya, Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the Aegean coast recorded record-high hotel occupancy rates in early 2025.

Meanwhile, new investments in cultural and eco-tourism across the Black Sea and Central Anatolia regions are helping to distribute tourism revenue more evenly across the country. Analysts highlight that tourism growth has created new jobs and spurred innovation in hospitality and transportation sectors.

Strategic goals for the future

Turkey’s 2030 vision aims for 80 million annual visitors and $100 billion in tourism revenue. To achieve this, the government plans to prioritize sustainable tourism, eco-friendly infrastructure, and digital marketing strategies.

Officials emphasize that Turkey’s future lies not only in sun-and-sea tourism but also in strengthening its presence in gastronomy, wellness, and cultural tourism—positioning the country as a comprehensive travel destination.
